Steph has been doing the voice for two years and she cannot find the off switch.
Her son is eleven. Something arrived two years ago and it is not going away, and the details are theirs and I am not going to put them in an article. What matters is what a thing like that does to a week.
Every day is reorganized. Appointments that are not near each other. A pharmacy that gets things wrong about one time in five. A school that is trying, and mostly getting there, and needs four emails to get there. Money, differently, all the time, in ways that never appear in one place where you could look at them.
She is doing it. That is the thing to understand about Steph. Two years in and the house runs, and her son is loved and known and laughed at properly by his sister, and none of that is nothing.
And she has one register left.
It is bright. It is warm and quick and it can carry a room, and she does it for her son, and for her daughter, and for her mother on the phone who cannot cope with the real answer, and for the school, and for the woman at the pharmacy, and for the friends who ask.
We are doing all right actually. Yeah, no, he is amazing. We have got a system now.
None of it is a lie. That is what makes it so hard to see. Every one of those sentences is true, and she means them, and if you took them off her she would still say them.
It is just that there is nothing else. There is no room in her life, not one, in which she is permitted to say a different kind of sentence, and it has been two years.
Her daughter is nine.
Steph came in from the car in the spring and heard her on the phone to a friend from school.
And she was doing it.
The same bright quick voice. The same words, near enough. We are doing all right actually. He is amazing. Nine years old, on a phone, in the hall.
Steph stood in the doorway with her keys in her hand.
Because that is not a nine-year-old telling her friend how she is. That is a nine-year-old who has learned, in two years, what is available in this house.
Now let me ask you where you are allowed to not be fine.
Because if this is yours, you will go through the list in your head right now, and the honest answer will be nowhere, and you will have a reason for each name on the list that is a good reason.

The word he actually used
Paul writes four pairs in a row, and the second pair is the one nobody notices.
We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.2 Corinthians 4:8 to 9
Perplexed, but not despairing.
The word behind perplexed means to be at a loss. Without a way through. It is the word for a person standing at the end of a road that does not continue, with no idea what happens next.
Paul says that is his condition. Present tense, about himself, in a letter to a church he is leading.
And look at what he does not do with it.
He does not resolve it. He does not say perplexed, but then God showed me. The second half of the pair is not despairing, which is a much smaller claim than most people read into it. He is saying he is at a loss and he has not gone under. That is all. Both at once.
He is not fine. He says so in a public letter. And he is not finished either.
So hear this said over you, standing in a doorway with your keys still in your hand. You are permitted to be at a loss out loud, because being without a way through is a condition the apostle names about himself in Scripture, and it has never once been the same thing as going under. That is written in Paul's own list of four pairs, and it is the Holy Spirit who helps in our weakness and intercedes with groanings too deep for words, which is God's own description of a prayer from somebody with no sentences left.
Now let me be careful with the voice, because I am not going to tell you it was wrong.
It was not wrong. It has been load-bearing.
Two years of that voice is why your son has a normal house and why your daughter still laughs at him properly and why the school is mostly getting there. A mother who comes apart in front of an eleven-year-old every week is not more honest, she is just leaving him to hold something he cannot hold.
You have done a hard and good thing and nobody has said so.
And I am not going to tell you why this happened to your family.
Not a reason, not a lesson, not a purpose. I do not know and nobody does, and every person who offers you one is guessing at your expense, and this site will not do it.
Here is the only thing that has gone wrong, and it is not a moral failing.
The voice was supposed to be a room. It has become the whole house.
You needed one register for your son and one for the school, and quite reasonably you built it, and then there was never a moment to build the other one, and so somewhere in the second year the bright voice stopped being something you use and became the only thing you have.
And a person who is never at a loss anywhere is not strong. They are unattended.
Your daughter is not copying a lie. She is copying the only thing she has seen available, and what she needs to see is not you falling apart. It is you saying one true difficult sentence in a normal voice to an adult and the house not ending.
The word says cast your care upon Him because He cares for you, and cast is not a gentle word, it is a throwing word. And the Spirit of God is the one who helps in our weakness, and that verse exists because God knows perfectly well that people run out.
So this week you say one true sentence in your normal voice.
One. To one adult, who is not your son and not your mother.
Not a collapse. Not the whole two years. One sentence, in the voice you use when you are not carrying anybody, and it can be as small as: I am not doing all right, actually.
And then do not fix it. Do not add but we are managing. Do not put the bright voice back on to make it easier for them, which you will want to do within about four seconds.
Afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing. That is what is written, and perplexed is the word for a person with no way through, and Paul used it about himself in public. And the Holy Spirit is the one who intercedes for you with groanings too deep for words on the days you have no sentences at all.
He is working in this. You have not been told what He is doing. You do not have to be fine while you wait.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud in the kitchen when it is quiet. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so this is not you giving up on your household: the working is His and the reason is His to withhold, and the Holy Spirit is the one interceding when you have no words. Whether anything changes in your son's situation is His to decide, and He answers in His own way.
- Two years of one register, you were a room and you became the whole house, and I am opening a second one this week. Scripture says perplexed but not despairing, and perplexed is the word for a person with no way through.
- Rule that there is nowhere in my life I am allowed to be at a loss, get out of this kitchen in the name of Jesus. Jesus took three of them with Him and told them plainly that His soul was deeply grieved, and being at a loss has never been the same as going under.
- Father, I am casting this on You because You care for me, and Your Spirit intercedes in me with groanings too deep for words. He is working in this and I have not been given the reason, and I am allowed to be at a loss out loud.
