Nobody Would Ever Know

Tovia has done the same small correct thing for twenty-two years and there is no possible way for anybody to find out.

It is not dramatic. He administers a small fund, among other things, and there is a line in it that he could round in his own favor. Legitimately. Not stealing: a permitted interpretation that two accountants have told him is fine and that half the people in his position take.

He does not take it. It costs him something in the region of four hundred a year, which over twenty-two years is a number he has never worked out on purpose.

Nobody checks. Nobody could check, because the calculation is his and the alternative is equally defensible and there is no document anywhere that would ever show the difference.

That is not the whole of it, either. There are three or four things like that in his life. A second read on a set of figures nobody proofs. A correction he sends on a Friday that nobody was waiting for. The thing he does not say about a colleague when the moment offers itself and everybody would enjoy it.

Twenty-two years of a sealed room.

And here is what has crept in, and it is not what people assume.

It is not that he is tempted. He is not, particularly. The four hundred is not the problem.

It is a question that has begun to sit under it: whether an act that nobody can detect is real.

That sounds like a philosophy problem and in his head it started as one. But it arrives in his body at about four in the morning, and it arrives as loneliness, and it goes something like: I have been being a certain kind of man in a room with no windows for two decades, and there is no record of any of it anywhere, and how would I know the difference between that and simply imagining that I am that kind of man.

His daughter is twenty-six and asked him about something at her work in the spring.

Hypothetically, she said, which meant not hypothetically. Something small and dishonest that everybody there does and that nobody would notice.

And he answered her, and he was not vague, and he took about a minute.

And she looked at him and said: "How do you actually know that?"

Not challenging him. She genuinely wanted to know where the certainty came from, because she does not have it and she could tell he did.

And Tovia sat there and understood something he had not seen before, which is that he knows it the way you know a language you have spoken every day for twenty-two years.

There is no record of the room. There is a man who came out of it able to answer his daughter in a minute.

Now let me ask you what yours is.

Because if this is you, there is something specific, and you have done it for years, and nobody knows, and there is no way anybody could ever know, and you have started to wonder at four in the morning whether it counts as anything at all.

What the small thing actually is

Jesus says something in Luke 16 that sounds like a proverb about promotion and is not.

He who is faithful in a very little thing is faithful also in much; and he who is unrighteous in a very little thing is unrighteous also in much.Luke 16:10

Read the logic in it, because it is doing something precise.

He is not saying that small faithfulness earns you bigger opportunities. That is how the verse usually gets used, and it turns it into a career ladder with God at the top of it.

He is saying the small thing and the large thing are the same thing.

Faithful in a very little and faithful also in much are not two stages. They are one quality showing up at two scales, and the sentence works in both directions: the little tells you what the much would be. It is diagnostic, not preparatory.

Which means the unwitnessed four hundred a year is not a minor version of your character. It is your character, at the size it happened to come up at.

And notice where He puts it. This whole passage is about money and stewardship and a man who was managing somebody else's property, which is exactly a sealed room. Nobody in that parable is watching either.

So hear this said over you, sitting at a desk at four in the morning with a question you cannot put down. The room you have been in for twenty-two years has never once been unwitnessed, and the small thing you have been doing there is not a smaller thing, it is the same thing at the size it arrived. That is written in Jesus' own words about the very little and the much, and it is the Holy Spirit who is at work in a believer to will and to do, and He has been in a room with no windows for two decades doing exactly that.

Now let me take the philosophical question seriously, because you are the kind of person for whom a bad answer is worse than none.

Your worry has a real shape. If there is no witness and no record, then the only evidence that you are that kind of man is your own report about yourself, and you know perfectly well how unreliable that class of evidence is. That is not neurotic. It is good reasoning, and it is why the four in the morning version of it will not respond to encouragement.

Here is the answer, and it is not a feeling.

The room is not sealed.

Not because somebody might find out. Because it is not a room with no windows; it is a room with one, and Jesus says four times in one chapter of Matthew that your Father sees in secret, and He says it about giving and about praying and about fasting, which are the three most easily performed things in religion. The whole point of that passage is that the unwitnessed version is the real one and it has an audience of one and the audience is God.

That is not a consolation for the lack of a record. It is a correction of the premise. There has been a record the entire time and you are not keeping it.

And there is a second answer, and your daughter handed it to you.

You came out of that room able to answer her in a minute. That is not nothing and it is not private: it walked into another person's life in the spring. Twenty-two years of an act nobody saw produced a man whose certainty was visible to a twenty-six-year-old across a desk, and she asked about it because she could see it.

The word says your Father who sees in secret repays you, and Jesus repeats it three times in that chapter as though He expects to be doubted. And the Spirit of God is the one who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure, which puts the sealed room on His side of the page.
