The Arrow That Goes Nowhere

Robyn got as far as an envelope and a pencil before she understood what was actually bothering her.

The change came by email on a Sunday evening. Sessions moving, one group merging with another, a new arrangement about the older ones. Not a catastrophe. A real change, with real consequences for about forty families and a Tuesday that will now not work for eleven of them.

The email was warm. It thanked everybody for their understanding in advance.

And at the bottom it said, as these things do, that this address does not accept replies.

So Robyn did the ordinary thing. She went to find out who to ask.

The website has a committee page. The committee page has four names on it, and one of them is a woman who moved away in the spring, and Robyn only knows that because their children were in the same class.

There is a general contact form. She used it on the Monday and got an automatic acknowledgement.

She asked the coach on the Wednesday, pleasantly, not as a complaint, and the coach said, entirely honestly, "I think that came from the committee," in a tone that made it clear he had found out the same way she had.

She asked another parent, who said, "Oh, I think it is the club manager," and a third, who said, "It will be the trust, they run four pools."

Which is when Robyn, on the Thursday, sitting in the car park with twenty minutes to fill, turned over an envelope and started drawing it.

She drew a box for the coach. A box for the committee. A box for the club manager. A box for the trust. And she drew arrows for who answers to whom.

And she got about four boxes in and stopped, because she had drawn an arrow from herself and it did not land anywhere.

It just stopped. In the middle of the envelope, with nothing at the end of it.

She sat and looked at that for a while.

Because up until that moment she had assumed the problem was that she had not looked hard enough. That there was a page she had missed, a name she had not found, a proper channel she was too new to know about. She had been irritated with herself all week for being the kind of person who cannot work out how to ask a simple question.

And what the envelope showed her, in about ninety seconds and in her own handwriting, was that the line genuinely stops.

Not hidden. Not above her. Stops.

Now let me ask you where yours ends.

Because there is something you were told about rather than asked about, and when you went looking for who to ask, you did not find them. And I would guess you concluded that this was a failure of yours.

Somebody wrote down who chooses

There is a small scene in Acts, about a genuinely practical problem, and the thing worth noticing is a single phrase.

The church has a fair complaint on its hands: one group of widows is being overlooked in the daily distribution. The apostles do not deny it and they do not handle it alone.

Therefore, brethren, select from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this task.Acts 6:3

Select from among you. Not: we will appoint. Not: the arrangement will be announced. The congregation chooses, the apostles confirm, and Luke bothers to record the mechanism.

And notice why it mattered. The complaint was from the people at the edge of that community, the ones with the least standing, and the response was to build a route by which they could be answered.

So hear this said over you, in a car park with a pencil and an envelope. Your wish to know who decided is not fussiness, it is the same instinct the earliest church wrote a procedure for, and the reason you could not find the person is that there is no line, not that you failed to look. That is written, and it is the Holy Spirit who is named in that verse as part of the qualification, which tells you He is not indifferent to how these things are arranged.

Now let me be careful about what this article is not doing.

Nothing here tells you to escalate.

Not a formal complaint, not a letter to the trust, not a post in the parents' group. This article does not know your club, does not know what it would cost, and has no business spending it. If you let the whole thing go and rearrange your Tuesday, you have not failed anything here.

And nothing here says anybody is wicked. Almost every organization that ends up like this got there by accident: people left, a page was not updated, a decision moved somewhere for a good reason and the route back never got rebuilt. There is usually no villain at the end of that arrow. There is usually just nobody.

What this is for is one thing.

The arrow really does stop.

That is it. And what it gives you is not leverage, it is the end of a private argument you have been having with yourself all week. You have not been failing to find something. You have been looking for something that is not there, and there is a specific relief in being told that, and I think you already felt it when you looked down at your own handwriting.

You are able to see a structure clearly, and seeing it is not a character flaw, and Scripture's own earliest church wrote down who chooses because it thought the question mattered. That is written, and the Spirit of God is the one who tells the difference between a person being difficult and a person being right, and He does it in His own time.

There was a movement five hundred years ago that spent an enormous amount of energy on exactly this problem, and the odd thing about them is that they were not radicals about it. They liked order. What they could not tolerate was an arrow that stopped: a decision with nothing above it and no route back to the people it landed on. So they wrote courts, and appeals, and minutes, and a way for an ordinary member to be answered.

They would have understood your envelope immediately.
