Six words, and the room went quiet, and Marc has been living in that quiet since February.
The meeting was ordinary. Fourteen people, a screen, a change to the way something is done that had been decided somewhere and was now being explained. The person explaining it was not the person who decided it and everybody knew that, and it was being taken well enough.
And Marc, who is not a difficult man and has never once been described as one, put his hand up and said, "Sorry, who signed this off?"
That was it. That is the whole of the incident, and I want to be honest that written down like that it looks like nothing.
It was not nothing in the room.
There was a pause of about two and a half seconds. The person at the front said a name, and then, and this is the part Marc has replayed perhaps four hundred times, added: "Why?"
And Marc said, "No, no reason. Just wondering."
And they moved on.
Nobody said anything to him afterward. There was no consequence, nothing was raised, and his manager has been entirely normal with him since. On any objective account, absolutely nothing happened.
He has thought about it every week since February.
Not about the change, which he has adapted to and which is fine. About the two and a half seconds, and about the why, and mostly about his own answer, because just wondering was a lie and he knew it as it came out.
He was not just wondering. He wanted to know whether anybody with a name attached to it had actually looked at the thing, because there had been a version of it in November that had a genuine problem in it, and he had a suspicion that nobody had been in a position to catch it.
And what he has been doing for six months is deciding whether he is the problem.
He said one sentence about it to Roy at break in the summer, in the way people say things at break, looking at a mug rather than a person.
He said, "I think I embarrassed somebody in February."
And Roy, who has been on sites for thirty-one years and has the emotional range of a filing cabinet and is also occasionally the wisest man in the building, said:
"You asked who signed it off."
Marc said yes.
And Roy said, "That is the only question there is, son. And you have spent six months saying sorry for it in your own head."
Now let me ask you what yours was.
Because there is one. A question you asked once, in a meeting or a kitchen or a committee, that was perfectly ordinary and produced a pause. And you have been carrying the pause ever since and quietly deciding that you are difficult.

The question is in the book
Proverbs says a thing about decisions that is so plain it gets read as management advice, and it is worth noticing that it is in Scripture at all.
Without consultation, plans are frustrated, but with many counselors they succeed.Proverbs 15:22
Without consultation, plans are frustrated. Not: the person deciding is wicked. Not: authority is suspect. The claim is about outcomes. A decision made without anybody else in the room tends to go wrong, and it goes wrong for structural reasons rather than moral ones, and God put that observation in the wisdom literature.
With many counselors they succeed. Plural, repeatedly, throughout the book. Proverbs comes back to this four or five separate times, which in that book is the equivalent of underlining.
So hear this said over you, at break with your hands round a mug. Your question was a wisdom question and Scripture asks it constantly, and six months of deciding you are difficult has been six months of prosecuting yourself for agreeing with Proverbs. That is written, and it is the Holy Spirit who convicts a person of what is actually wrong with them, which means half a year of turning this over without ever landing on anything was not Him working slowly.
Now let me be exact about what this article is not doing, because this is where a message like this can wreck somebody's job.
Nothing here tells you to ask again.
Not at the next meeting, not in an email, not with more people copied in. This article does not know your workplace, it does not know what that would cost you, and it has no business spending your standing for you. If you never raise it again, you have done nothing wrong.
And nothing here says anybody has failed. The person at the front was explaining a decision they did not make. The person whose name was given may well have looked at it properly. Most situations like this are not somebody being wicked, they are somebody being left holding a thing alone because nobody ever built anything around them, and that describes a great many decent people.
What is being handed back is one thing.
The question was ordinary.
That is the whole of it. Not brave, not subversive, not a challenge. Ordinary, of the kind Proverbs asks four times, and the fact that it produced two and a half seconds of silence is information about the room and not about you.
And here is the part that has actually been costing you, and I want to name it precisely.
You did not lie about the change. You lied about yourself.
Just wondering was the lie, and you have known that since the moment it left you, and what you have been carrying for six months is not the question, it is the retraction. You asked something reasonable and then immediately told a room you had no reason for asking, and that small untruth is the thing that has been going round.
You can put that down too. It was a reflex, produced in two and a half seconds of silence, by a man who did not want to make anybody uncomfortable. That is not a character flaw, and the written word says a false balance is an abomination while an honest one is His delight, and He is not standing over you about a sentence you said under pressure in a meeting.
You are able to notice how a decision was made without that being pride, and you are able to have got flustered afterward without that being cowardice. The Spirit of God is the one who separates real conviction from a general sense of having done something wrong, and He does it in His own way and rarely at the speed of a person turning something over at four in the morning.
There was a movement five hundred years ago whose central practical conviction was exactly Roy's sentence: that somebody has to be able to ask who signed it off, and that if the arrangement makes asking expensive then the arrangement is wrong rather than the person asking. They built the whole thing so that a question like yours would cost nobody anything.
You have been paying a price the design was meant to abolish.
So tonight the question comes out of the file it has been in.
You are going to write it down, in your own handwriting, exactly as you asked it. Six words, or however many it was.
And then you are going to leave the space under it empty. No explanation, no apology, no note about how you probably should not have. That space is where six months have gone, and it stays blank tonight.
Without consultation plans are frustrated, and with many counselors they succeed, and that is in the wisdom literature because God thinks it is worth knowing. That is what is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells conviction from a vague sense of having offended, and He does it at His own pace.
You are not difficult. You asked the only question there is.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud with the question written and nothing under it. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so this is not you taking a stand against anybody: the clarity is His to give, and the Holy Spirit is the one who convicts of what is actually wrong. Whether you ever raise it again is yours to weigh and His to lead, and He answers in His own way.
- Two and a half seconds of quiet, you are information about a room and not about me, and I am not carrying you into a seventh month. Scripture says without consultation plans are frustrated but with many counselors they succeed, and it says it four separate times.
- Verdict that I am the difficult one, get out of this canteen in the name of Jesus. Jesus is the one who convicts of what is actually wrong, and six months of turning this over has never once landed on anything.
- Father, You put the question in the wisdom literature Yourself, and Your Spirit is telling me so with it written down and nothing underneath it. Authority is meant to answer to something, and what I asked was an ordinary question.
