Orpha has been on that board eleven years and the meetings take about nine minutes.
It is the water association. Nine members, second Thursday, in the hall, and it matters more than it sounds: it is who has water in that hollow and what it costs and what happens when the line under the creek goes, which it has twice.
And the meetings take nine minutes.
Somebody reads the last minutes. Somebody moves to accept them. Somebody seconds. All in favor. Then whatever the item is gets described, in about a minute and a half, and there is a pause of the kind that is not really a pause, and somebody moves, and somebody seconds, and all in favor, and Orpha's hand goes up with everybody else's, and they are out by twenty past.
She worked out in about year three where the deciding happens.
It happens on the phone, the night before, between two of them. Not secretly. Not maliciously. Those two have been doing this since before some of the rest were born, they know the system better than anybody alive, and they are almost always right.
And by the time Thursday comes, it is done.
Orpha has never once said this out loud in that hall. She is not a woman who makes trouble and she genuinely likes both of them and she would tell you the water has never once failed on their watch, which is more than the county can say.
But here is the thing, and it took a nine-year-old to put it into words.
Her granddaughter asked her, in the truck, on the way to something else entirely: "Mamaw, what do you do on that board?"
And Orpha said, "I vote."
And the girl said, "On what?"
And Orpha opened her mouth to answer that and found she could not do it in a way that would make sense to a child.
Because the honest answer is: on things that have already been settled. And once you have said that out loud to a nine-year-old, you cannot un-hear it.
Now let me ask you where yours happens.
Because there is a room you sit in where the deciding is not done. A committee, a team meeting, a family conversation, a board. And you have been putting your hand up for years, and the hand going up is real and the deciding is somewhere else, and you have never once said so because saying so would sound sour.

What the counsel is actually for
Proverbs says it in one line, and the line is not about politeness.
Where there is no guidance the people fall, but in abundance of counselors there is victory.Proverbs 11:14
Where there is no guidance the people fall. The word underneath guidance comes from the world of steering a ship. It is about a thing that keeps the whole vessel from going where it should not.
In abundance of counselors there is victory. And that is a claim about outcomes, not about feelings. Proverbs is not saying people like being consulted, although they do. It is saying that decisions made with several minds in the room actually come out better, and that decisions made without them actually go wrong more often.
So hear this said over you, in the truck with a nine-year-old asking a plain question. Your wish to have the discussion in the room is a wisdom instinct and not a sour one, and eleven years of assuming you were being difficult has been eleven years of disagreeing with yourself for no reason. That is written, and it is the Holy Spirit who is the one who convicts a person of what is genuinely wrong with them, which means eleven years of a vague unease that never landed anywhere was not Him going slowly.
Now let me be extremely careful, because this is the exact article that could cost somebody a friendship they value.
Nothing here tells you to say it in the hall.
Not at the next meeting, not in the parking lot, not to the two of them privately. This article does not know that hollow, it does not know what those relationships are worth, and it has no business spending them on your behalf. If you never mention it, you have done nothing wrong.
And nothing here says those two have done anything wicked. Read that again if you need to. Two people who know a system better than anybody alive and who have kept the water on for decades are not villains, and this is how it usually happens: not a seizure, but a slow settling, where the people who know the most end up carrying the most and nobody ever builds anything around them.
That is a description of a great many good and tired people.
What this is for is the thing your granddaughter uncovered, and it is only about you.
Your unease is accurate.
Not a bad attitude. Not eleven years of quiet resentment that you should repent of. An accurate reading of a room, held by a woman who has never once acted on it, and the reason it will not go away is that it is correct.
You are allowed to know something and not do anything about it. That is not cowardice and it is not complicity; there are seasons for speaking and seasons for keeping quiet, and Scripture says so in as many words. What has been costing you is not the silence. It is that you have been paying for the silence with self-suspicion, as though a person who sees clearly and stays quiet must be a person with something wrong in them.
There is nothing wrong in you. The Word says an abundance of counselors is where safety is, and the Spirit of God is the one who separates true conviction from an old habit of assuming you are the problem, and He does it in His own time.
There was a movement five hundred years ago whose entire structural idea was that no one person, however experienced and however right, should be the place where a decision finally rests. They did not build that because they distrusted people. They built it because they had watched what happens to decisions, and to the good people making them alone, and they thought a room full of ordinary members with a vote that meant something was worth the extra time it cost.
Nine minutes was never the target.
So tonight you say the true thing once, in a room with nobody in it.
Not in the hall. Not to either of them. Here, alone, out loud, so that it exists somewhere outside your own head for the first time in eleven years.
One sentence: the thing you will not simply accept because it was announced. And then you stop. There is no second half to this exercise and no plan attached to it.
Where there is no guidance the people fall, and in an abundance of counselors there is safety, and that is in the wisdom literature because God considers it worth knowing. That is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who tells the difference between an accurate observation and a bad heart, and He has been telling you for eleven years and you have not been able to hear Him over the self-suspicion.
You are not sour. You are right, and you have been quiet about it, and both of those can be true in the same woman.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud, alone. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so this is not you taking a position against anybody: the clarity is His to give, and the Holy Spirit is the one who convicts of what is truly wrong. Whether anything in that hall ever changes is His to decide, and He answers in His own way.
- Eleven years of assuming I was being sour, you are over, and I am not carrying you into a twelfth. Scripture says where there is no guidance the people fall, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety, and that is a claim about how decisions actually come out.
- Habit of suspecting myself every time I see something clearly, get out of this hall in the name of Jesus. Jesus is the one who convicts of what is genuinely wrong, and eleven years of unease that never once landed anywhere was never Him.
- Father, You put the counsel in the wisdom writing Yourself, and Your Spirit is telling me so with the true sentence finally said out loud. Authority is meant to answer to something, and I am not wrong to want the discussion in the room.
